Natural Beauty - Ditch and Dike System
A canal crosses the landscape towards a river.
Aerial view of ditch and dike system. The ditch and dike system was critical in draining and solidifying the marshy island so that Fort Pulaski could be built. Hundreds of enslaved and free laborers hand-dug the system that is still a crucial tool against climate change and increased flooding on the island.
