The Tamiami Trail, was painstakingly constructed in 1928 as the first major road to connect Tampa and Miami. The orientation of the road across the state severed the natural flow of water from Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades, which threw its delicate ecosystem out of balance. Recent projects have been implemented to restore natural waterflow to the Everglades, but more work is needed.
