Prairie landscape, Nicodemus National Historic Site, 2015.
Kansas seems to be covered by a vast, seemingly-untouched prairie landcape. The vibrant greens, yellows, blues and purples extend as far as the eye can see. If you look closely, however, you will begin to notice the ruts of long-abandoned, overgrown roads, the subtle presence of non-native flora and even hear the distant drone of high-altitude aircraft. This landscape has been adapted to and interacted with human inhabitants for millennia. This is a landscape of use that still manages to retain natural beauty.
