Post-war impressions, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, 1865.

At Farmville, VA, Eugene Beague of the 45th Pennsylvania saw many Confederates making their way home after the surrender. He wrote: “During our stay in the vicinity of Farmville we got to be quite chummy with the Confederate paroled prisoners who were very much in evidence on the streets after the surrender. I don’t know what impression we made on their minds but they looked a great deal better to us meekly eating our hardtack than they did coming at us full drive with loaded muskets and yelling like destruction!”
