The motivation to give is a simple one, says Bob Moore, the Park’s liaison for fund-raising, point to the interest many people have in the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg. “Gettysburg is the Civil War for most Americans,” Moore claims. “They all know its story and, for many, it’s the only Civil War park they’ll ever visit.” A sense of historical connection provides a further incentive. Many people can trace their community’s history back to a regiment raise to fight in the War between The State. Just maybe, there’s a monument or marker to that regiment somewhere at Gettysburg. And, there is the feeling of patriotism currently sweeping the country. This outpouring of nationalistic fervor can be witnessed in the success of the Statue of Liberty and Pennsylvania Memorial campaigns. Americans want to pay their respects to those who put their lives on the line for what they believe in – especially when it’s their country. Gettysburg provides that. A pristine setting of an earlier American complete with the echoes of a patriotic past.
