Cleaning the Peace Memorial at Gettysburg National Mililary Park in March 2007
Peace Memorial this monument, located in the vicinity of Buford Avenue, is constructed on granite, with some softer limestone components. The natural gas flame, a central feature of the monument, had darkened some of the limestone, creating an attractive surface for inscribed graffiti. Conventional cleaning methods were proving to be unsatisfactory, and the accumulation of graffitti was accelerating. In March, 2007, the GNMP Monument Branch hired a private sector firm to "soda blast' the limestone. The technique, which produces only biodegradable abrasive material, proved very successful. The grafitti problem appears to have ceased, now that there is no "attractive" surface, and the improved appearance has enhanced the visitor experience.
