Respected Friends
D. Merritt & Son I receiv’d yours of the 13th Instant in due season the contents of which I was some what surprised at I immediately went to see Capt Rusco who appeared to be very much surprised He stated to me that he did not go to Schenectady with the Boat but hired a Capt Parsons to go with it. Rusco and myself went to see Capt Parsons who stated that he got froze in a few miles above Schenectady but after a few days got to Schenectady with the Boat he then went to D W & Co and while at their Store saw a waggon loading with empty Bags Marked D. Merritt & Son he told D W & Co the wheat was yours and they took off bags enough to hold the wheat which was put in your bags except about 15 Bush which was a little wet they spread that in the loft and promised to have it Spread untill it got dry. he got short of Cash and Sold 31 Bus to pay expenses which Rusco says he will pay for. Parsons says D W & Co promise to Send the wheat to you the next day. he says he told them if they would not send it the next"
On back of document: "day he would stay and attend to it himself they assured him they would attend to it and he came home. Yours of the 18th is also at hand and contents noticed. as respects the 1200 Bus wheat I have bot on my own a/c and had ground you state you will take with what I have bot for you. but as I want my Friends in N. York it will suit me better Not to draw on you but let it lay until I go to N.Y. which will be about 1st 4 mo then I will take your note at as long a time from that date as I can get it discounted. which will probably be 90 days with Interest from this time. which will no doubt suit you as well as a draft through the Bank of Geneva @ 4mo if so you may have it at the same rate I agreed to buy for you
I remain your friend
R.P. Hunt
NB Please let me know if you take it as above also what D.W. &Co says in reply to Capt. Parsons. if his story is correct they D W & Co are more to blame[inserted] than him”
