Mosaic Canyon, Death Valley National Park, 2015.
Mosaic Canyon showcases many geologic features! The canyon is formed by a system of cracks (faults) that developed millions of years ago. Running water seeped into the faults for many centuries, gradually carving out the canyon. Periodic flooding continues to bring sand, gravel and rock from surrounding areas. This debris is deposited just past the canyon mouth, creating a large, wedge-shaped alluvial fan. The name 'Mosaic Canyon' comes from the rock formation called Mosaic Breccia. 'Breccia' means 'fragments'. So, this formation is composed of angular fragments of many different kinds of parent rock which can be seen on the canyon floor (even near the parking area.) NOTE: This geologic outdoor museum is protected by law. Enjoy the area but leave it undisturbed. NO ROCK COLLECTING ALLOWED.
