Western Snowy Plover

Western Snowy Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) at Crissy Field in winter. These small, charismatic birds blend in to their sandy habitat that they are often hard for beachgoers to spot. As a result they are easily disturbed and forced to expend excessive amounts of energy fleeing. This in turn increases plovers susceptibility to predator attacks and reduces the energy reserves they need to be successful in the breeding season. Beachgoers can help by sticking close to the water and keeping pets on leashes in designated wildlife protection areas.
