Envelope: “Richard Hunt care of Wm A Garrigues Morristown Burlington Co N Jersey”
“Second day Feb 28th 1853
Dear Brother Richard
I do not know as it is exactly fair for me to write two letters to thy one why does thee not write? this is not keeping to thy promise. I think thee is to bad. I hope thee has got [better – crossed out] well by this time, when did thee hear from Cousin Mary Truman Sims wife I wrote to her a good while ago but have not got any answer yet. Cousin Lizzie is out here now she came out last fifth day to attend William Burroughs wedding he married Lucinda Berie she is going home fourth day I believe. Julia is going in a week from today to Syracuse to spend a week. I wanted to go with her but Father would not let me. Now is thee getting along in thy studies and is William Garrigues as strict as he was? Mother wants me to tell thee that we have been looking for a letter from thee every day this week, but have not received one yet. We went to Aunt Lydia’s last Seventh day afternoon a little while she said Walter had had a letter from Benjamin Underhill saying that Richard was quite sick and had been up [there staying- crossed out] to Uncle George’s staying but would likely be well enough in two or three days to go to the store again he did not say what was the matter with him had thee heard any thing about it? does thee do so much writing as thee used to. I must close so good-bye from thy very affectionate Sister Sarah.
“4th day Evening
Dear Brother
We received a letter from thee to-day also a Valentine I am much obliged to thee or Willie Mellor whoever sent it. I was worried about thee as we received no letter from thee last week. [Sate] has taken a very small piece of paper to write on, but cannot fill it. Cousin Lizzie Aunt Mary Ann Uncle George and Aunt Margaret took tea with us last night – they are all well Wilson said that potatoes were selling at 25 cents a pound not much else of consquence. I don’t think he will be home in the spring. Abbey’s arrived last evening they have been in Canadaigua ever since the day before Christmas [Mate] (I mean big Mate) did not come she had to stay to do up some sewing I guess they will get letters this week. Ask Willie Mellor if Lizzie has answered my letter I guess not for I have not received any. Pa received a letter from Caleb he was writing to thee then. We have as many scholars as usual now coming Julia & Sarah are invited to another fancy party at Seneca Falls I dont believe they will go as their are not many going from here on account of Hetty Swift’s death thee remembers they lived in the large white house opposite the Cotton Factory. Well they moved to New York last spring and Hetty died there we will send thee the paper that speaks of it – write very soon farewell thy aff sister Mary”
