Giant wildfire used for resource benefit, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, summer 2003
Fire has been used as a management tool in the giant sequoia - mixed conifer forests of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks since the 1960s. Fire is necessary in these forests to provide openings for giant sequoia reproduction, to thin the forest of small trees and reduce hazardous fuel accumulations, and to restore the natural ecological processes that evolved with frequent fire. Though the Giant Fire was lightning-caused, it was in an area of ongoing prescribed burning and was designated a Wildland Fire Use Project. It was allowed to burn, but extra protection was given to individual giant sequoia trees and to cultural resources. A total of 275 acres burned.
