Supporting Images for PMIS#16750 - Mitigate feral animal ingress to protect recovering Haleakala Rainforest
Images/Maps that support Haleakala National Park's project proposal to Mitigate feral animal ingress to protect recovering Haleakala Rainforest by a) Ensuring that Haleakala rainforest fences are a true barrier to feral animal ingress given changes in external population densities and potenetial alteration of habitat with climate change, and b) Remove feral pigs and goats from areas of ingress through failed "natural barriers" maintaining a zero tolerance threshold to allow continued ecosystem recovery.
a. Cyanea hamatiflora a critically endangered plant was restricted to steep slopes and is now recovering on gentle terrain. Figure 1b. Lobelia grayana a very rare plant was restricted to steep slopes and is now recovering on gentle terrain. Figure 1c. Recovery of the endemic plant cover on the forest floor has been dramatic as shown in this pie chart. Figure 1d. Native plant cover and density has continued to increase exponentially benefitting such species as this critically endangered Maui Parrotbill. Figure 1e. Woody species recovery exemplified by Ohelo continues to increase. Figure 1f. Recovering ohelo provide nectar and cover for forest birds such as this I’iwi. Figure 1g. Recovery of alani, a suite of endemic species in the citrus family has increased dramatically. Figure 1h. Recovery of alani is benefitting the critically endangered A’kohe’kohe. Figure 2. Photo shows rainforest fence lines in yellow and park boundary in blue. Dots denote locations of natural barriers that are subject to trespass by feral animals. Figure 3. Sharp contrast of protected park rainforest and unmanaged deforested lands with high populations of feral animals outside of the park. Figure 4a. Dramatic deforestation outside park. Figure 4b.
