Park Natural Resource Manager, Regional Fire Staff, IPMT Staff and representatives from the Southeastern Grasslands Institute evaluate grassland conditions at the Walpack open area.
In the 1950s, the Tocks Island Dam project threatened the ecological balance of the Walpack Valley in Sussex County, New Jersey. The proposed dam, intended to provide resources to major cities, risked inundating 37 miles of the valley, displacing residents, and submerging a historic district.
Public outcry against this proposed dam catalyzed the creation of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), compelling federal projects to undergo environmental review. The dam’s cancellation bolstered the environmental movement and led to pivotal laws like the Clean Air and Water Acts, highlighting the role of ecological preservation in lawmaking. This event demonstrated the power of public participation in shaping environmental policy, establishing protective measures for natural resources and biodiversity, and emphasizing the need to balance development with environmental stewardship.
Nestled in the heart of Walpack Valley, near the Walpack Center historic district, our grassland restoration initiative is reviving 120 acres of grasslands. This area, once at risk of submersion due to industrial ambitions, now thrives thanks to the vocal efforts of the community to safeguard their environment.
