An oil painting depicting multi-colored sandstone cliffs, gray cottonwood tree roots, green vegetation, and a bright red sky with concentric circles as the sun.
Kathy Hodge DeVault, Oil on canvas, February 2023.
Artist Description: This painting, Ascent I, oil/canvas, 24x36, is my donation to the collection of Zion National Park, in appreciation for my Artist Residency in February, 2023.
It depicts the rich colors and the layers of history in the canyon walls, the cottonwood roots suggesting the evolution of life to come, intertwined with rock layers embedded with fossilized early life forms, our common ancestors. The concentric circles of the petroglyph honor the early human inhabitants of Zion.
This painting will be part of a series from Zion, which I will be exhibiting at the Providence Art Club in June of 2024.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to be inspired by the amazing landscape of Zion National Park.
