Dear Sir:
On Friday afternoon, September 18, 1964, a chartered bus of 30 women from our community sponsored by the Knox County Choral Club made an hour and a half tour of the Battlegrounds with a guide named J. K. Cole. Mr. Cole was a very interesting guide and we did enjoy very much the tour.
Among many things Mr. Cole told us was the names of the States whose monuments we happened to be passing at the time. He showed us one of a general who later became president of Notre Dame of Indiana. We asked him if Indiana had a national monument to honor the Indiana dead of the war and he told us that we were one of the few States who had not yet put up a monument.
We questions him as to how to go about getting a monument in place from Indiana and he very kindly told us how it would have to be done. We all came home determined to have a monument placed in the near future from our great state of Indiana.
Upon arriving home, several people said Indiana had a monument and they had seen it and had pictures of it. Then a bus driver from Vincennes said he had seen it on the battlegrounds and could have taken us to it.
I called Judge Curtis Shake, who has always been interested in things hisotrical and he told me he had seen something but would not “swear” that it was a monument put up by the state. He suggested that I write to the Department of the Interior, National Park Services and ask them if there is a monument.
As of today I have not heard from my letter written to Washington on September 21. I thought perhaps we could get a faster answer if I wrote direct to you.
Can you please let me know by the first of November if possible whe[a]ther Indiana has placed a monument on the battleground park? Not only our own group but several other organizations would like to help us get things in motion to have one placed during the centennial of the War years. The board of the Indiana Federation of Women’s Clubs will meet on November 4th, and want to help us get going if there is the need for such.
I will appreciate any information you are able to give to us at this time.
Sincerely
Mrs. Carl W. Miller
