Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve was established to preserve signifcant examples of the rich natural and cultural resources of Louisiana's Mississippi Delta region. Shortly after the French founded New Orleans in 1718, a formal city plan established the French Quarter or Vieux Carre ("old square"). It is now a National Historic District. Within the French Quarter is the Visitor Center. The Center features exhibits which highlight the cultural diversity of the Mississippi Delta Region, while performances and demonstrations portray the traditions of the delta.
