A muskrat sits in shallow water munching on a stalk held between its white claws. Muskrats eat the roots, stems, leaves, and fruits of wetland plants. They create important openings in dense marsh vegetation. Note the blackish brown fur on top and the reddish tinge to the lighter brown sides.
