US Park Police Officer Joseph E. Shawhan was killed in the line of duty on April 15 1944.

"US Park Police Officer Shawhan was killed in an automobile accident while pursuing a suspect for a traffic violation. While in pursuit, the patrol car rounded a curve, jumped the curb, and struck a tree. Officer Shawhan was killed instantly.
