“First-day Dear Brother As I promised thee I would write I must fulfil my promise. Mother bought Uncle Tom’s Cabin it is very interesting thee must read it when thee comes home It is very warm indeed today but yesterday was cold enough for a fire. The woman that we have in the kitchen has a sore hand and we are afraid she will have to leave Thee must be careful and not get drowned fishing and swimming. Father brought George (colt) up to the house this morning he has a sore leg. We had some people here from Wolcot the other night and when Amos our hired man went to take him into the stable he kicked him and threw him most out of the stable. Marcella Underhill is teaching school now in Frank [Hutton’s] place she is very sick and has gone a traveling for her health. Sarah Smith (her sister) was here the other morning with some Elegant Strawberries in a large glass dish. Lucinda took it out of my hands to wash it and broke it all to pieces, she said that it was one she got from the store and did not know the price of it. Mother felt very badly about it for it was the time she had been here for a good while. Uncle Daniel Quinby was married yesterday no one had an invitation but Uncle Elijah and Aunt Mary, Father Mother, myself Aunt Hannah and Gilbert went out to Clyde sixthday afternoon to see Cousin Mary she was not very well I should think she would be very lonely.
