Hoarfrost, Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, 2016.
Hoarfrost occurs when an object is cooled below freezing by radiant cooling. When relative humidity in the surrounding air reaches a high percentage, must like dew in warmer months, hoarfrost can begin to appear on these subfreezing surfaces. It can become so thick at times that it appears as if snow has fallen! However, it is actually just interlocked ice crystals called hoarfrost.
