M. J. Sherman to Alice Mary Longfellow, 25 February 1895
Manuscript letter
[printed letterhead: Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute]
Hampton, Va., Feb. 25, 1895.
Dear Miss Longfellow,
We have assigned your scholarship to Maria Walker, as Katie Hunter is teaching this year.
Maria is one of our new girls, and is in our very lowest class. She is appreciative, and is doing well thus far, although she is at the very bottom of the ladder.
You will notice that her use of "angry" is very peculiar, and will probably read between the lines enough to see that she means “shabby.”
[p. 2] Thanking you for once more sending the annual scholarships, I am
Very truly yours,
M. J. Sherman -
