REPORT TO: Mr. Lamar Gibson, Director
State Parks & Recreation Commission
Mrs. Clarence Letteer, Chairman
Gettysburg Memorial Commission
SUBJECT: Inspection and approval by Consultant, of the 1/3rd (third) [sic] size clay model of the Louisiana Gettysburg Monument by Donald De Lue, Sculptor. Sculptor’s request for official approval by the Commission.
DATE: Visit to Donal De Lue’s studio, Leonardo, N.J.; July 18 and July 19, 1969. Date of this report by consultant, July 24, 1969, mailed from Providence, R.I.
On July 17, 1969, I left New Orleans and flew to Newark, N.J. On the morning of July 18th I travelled by local bus to Leonardo, N.J. where Mr. De Lue escorted me to his studio at 82 Highland Avenue.
There we spent the morning and afternoon discussing and studying the 1/3rd (third) size scale model which the sculptor had enlarged from the original scale model which was approved by the Commission in Baton Rouge, La., October 1968.
In accordance with the contracts of the sculptor and the consultant this 1/3rd size scale model was to be inspected and approved by the technical consultant, hence the trip to the sculptor’s studio in New Jersey, where he has been working since the signing of his contract on December 5, 1968.
The conference of the sculptor and the consultant covered the four following important subjects:
(1) The 1/3rd (third) size scale model of the Monument of Louisiana to be erected on the Gettysburg Battlefield
(2) The technical details of the Louisiana Monument as related to its location on the approved site of the Battlefield.
(3) The patina or finish on the surface of the bronze in the years to come.
(4) The sculptor’s Schedule of production.
