Restore Historic Dikes and Ponds at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in June 2010
These projects are a significant part of the ongoing maintenance backlog that must be accomplished through the use of additional labor that augments the NPS Maintenance staff. The 7 acres of historic ponds with bisecting dikes/walkways and the surrounding 34 acres of wetlands which are traversed by the boardwalk and river trails in Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens (Anacostia Park) currently lacks adequate maintenance staff to sufficiently maintain the 41 acres at NPS standards. Critical repairs are needed to maintain, restore, preserve and protect the natural resource, as well as ensuring a safe user experience when opening the trail to park visitors. Partnering with the Student Conservation Association ensures that the work will be completed with minimal impact and using Leave No Trace methods. SCA uses traditional trail skills rather than heavy machinery that can damage the natural and cultural resources.
