When Lewis Mountain was segregated, Shenandoah National Park, 1939.
NPS Collection photo: We must reflect on our most difficult stories, and one of the most difficult in Shenandoah NP is one of segregation. Lewis Mountain on Skyline Drive features a campground, store and picnic grounds. It's one of the most charming and popular spots today. However, from 1939 and throughout the 1940's it was segregated as the 'picnic ground for negroes.' Although desegregation took its time to arrive in Shenandoah NP, it did arrive more quickly here than in other parts of the south. By the summer of 1950 all of the park's facilities were open to all visitors, regardless of the color of their skin.
