Fuels reduction, Lone Pine Key, Everglades NP in May, 1999
Vegetation that accumulates in developed areas may become hazardous fuels. Hazardous fuels are reduced using handtools, machines such as mowers or masticators, or when conditions permit, by prescribed burning. In May, 1999 Everglades fire staff used prescribed burning to reduce hazardous fuels in the Lone Pine Key developed area.
