Photograph of exposed rootball at a fallen tree on Jamestown Island. Storm winds blew this tree down, exposing its rootball to weathering. Sediment weathered from the rootball washed into the nearest stream. The loss of the tree also may accelerate erosion by removal of the stabilizing roots.
