Bivouac of the Dead Tablets at Fort Donelson National Cemetary, Fort Donelson National Battlefield, in April 2005
Bivouac consists of three 3'x 1-1/2' cast-iron tablets set on wood posts. Each tablet has one verse of the poem "Bivouac of the Dead" cast with "Rook Island Arsenal 1881" on verso. Tablets are located in a semicircle on the north side of monument mound. || The poem, "The Bivouac of the Dead," was written by Theodore O'Hara in 1847 to commemorate the burial of Kentucky soldiers who fell at Battle of Buena Vista: "On Fame's eternal camping ground / Their silent tents are spread, / And Glory guards with solemn round / The bivouac of the dead."
