Cape Henry Memorial in April 2009
Here at Cape Henry, English colonists first landed on 1607 April 26; they later landed at Jamestown on 1607 April 26. Just off the shores on 1781 September 05 in the Battle of the Capes, French Admiral Comte deGrasse defeated a British fleet which prevented them relieving Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown. Originally part of Princess Anne County, Virginia, the county was absorbed into the independent city of Virginia Beach. The site is within the secured area of Fort Story.
