Group of Southern Cheyenne Women and Children Captured During the Battle of Washita at Either Fort Hays or Fort Dodge
LIBI_00019_00392; This item is an original albumen photograph of a group of Cheyenne (Southern) women and children captured at the Battle of the Washita, being held at either Fort Hayes or Fort Dodge. The photograph is 4 1/2 x 6 7/8" (8 x 9 7/8" mounted) and was produced circa 1869 by W.S. Soule. The image is believed to have been taken at Camp (Fort) Supply, Indian Territory. On the front, a mostly illegible handwritten caption provides a description of the captives at the Washita fort. "Soule [illegible word]" is written on the image in the lower right corner. On the verso, a handwritten notation in pencil reads, "Prisoners captured in the Battle of the Washita--Scout with them."Note: "Pkg 6/Box 3" handwritten on the verso.
