The oldest water-powered mill in Texas, Lowell National Historical Park, 2016.
Just outside the walls of San Jose Mission stands the oldest water-powered mill in Texas. It was built in 1794, at about the same time as the original Pawtucket Canal was being dug in Lowell), and restored in the 1930s. Water was channeled from the acequia (i.e., canal) and dropped down a chute to pour onto a horizontal waterwheel, visible at the bottom right of the photo. The wheel turned a shaft connected to a millstone that ground wheat, visible through the window. The mill could grind 600-800 pounds of wheat every day!
