Spoon by Laila El Mehelmy
Spoon by Laila El Mehelmy
This piece is made as a personal map of Old Kinderhook. It is a small hand carved wooden teaspoon that is bare except for the end of the handle where there is a small decorative leaf, in reference to the fact that Martin Van Buren was not born with a “silver spoon in his mouth,” but rather a wooden spoon that would later be decorated in order to fit in with his idea of aristocracy. As he became more prominent in society this spoon’s finish has slowly washed away and all that remains is the motif on the handle. The motif itself is taken directly from wallpaper in Lindenwald.
