Carrying out a small bone (475 pounds). The fossil's location in a wilderness area makes transportation very challenging because motorized equipment and mechanized transport are generally prohibited in wilderness areas. Here, one of the smaller neck bones, weighing 475 pounds, is carried several miles to the nearest road. Three of the ten neck bones were carried out by hand during October 1999. The rest of the neck bones, too heavy to carry out, were reburied to protect them from vandalism, theft, and erosion, until Big Bend National Park employees and the researchers decided what to do next.
