George Armstrong Custer, Confederate Prisoner Lieutenant James Barroll Washington and a Young Slave
LIBI_00019_00223; This item is an albumen stereograph (card-mounted photograph) of George A. Custer and Confederate prisoner, Lieutenant James Barroll Washington. Lieutenant Washington, with a young slave at his feet, is seated with Custer. The photograph is 3 3/8" X 6 3/4" mounted on a yellow mount and was produced circa 1862 by Alexander Gardner and James Gibson. On the front, the typed caption reads, "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1862, by Gardner & Gibson, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia." On the verso, a label glued to the back of the mount reads, "Brady's Album Gallery/No. 428/Lieut. Washington, a Confederate Prisoner/And/Capt. Custis [the "is" is written over with "er"] U.S.A/The Photographs of this series were taken directly from nature, at considerable cost. Warning is therefore given that legal proceedings will be at once instituted against any party infringing the copyright." A handwritten notation reads, "Pkg 3/Custer Chest." Anoth
