Dear Mrs. Miller:
Your letter to the National Park Service dated September 21, 1964, concerning an Indiana monument at Gettysburg has been referred to this office for reply.
Mr. Cole was correct when he stated that Indiana did not have a state memorial here. (By state memorial I mean a monument erected by a state in honor of all of its men who fought here.) There are a number of such memorials including those of New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, and North Carolina. The Texas Memorial was erected a few months ago.
All northern states with soldiers here have erected memorials to their individual units. Thus, Indiana has memorials here to six of her regiments. They were the 3d Cavalary and the 7th, 14th, 19th, 20th, and 27th Infantry Regiments. The state appropiated a total of $3,000 in 1885 for the erection of these memorials.
Sincerely yours,
Harry W. Pfanz
