Circle wildfire used for resource benefit, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, summer 2002
The Circle wildfire was ignited on May 31, 2002, by lightning striking the top of a giant sequoia tree and was discovered the next day by park helicopter reconnaissance. Fire was situated adjacent to the Trail of the Sequoias, a popular day-use area in Giant Forest, but was also within an area of ongoing prescribed burning. Fire was declared a fire use project, and two small burn-out operations were carried out, one using personnel from concurrent fire school as a training exercise. Total area burned was 8.6 acres, and fire was declared out on August 8, 2002.
