Photo 7: “Vessel Depicting the Water Spirit Avanyu"
Round black pot with engraving on the top half
“Vessel Depicting the Water Spirit Avanyu,” completed between 1930 – 1950 by Severa Gutierrez Tafoya, wife of Cleto Tafoya. Medium: Blackened terracotta. “Severa Gutierrez Tafoya’s Tewa blackware pot is incised with a zoomorphic being, the legendary Avanyu (water serpent). Embodying both earthly and otherworldly phenomena, the Avanyu symbolizes clouds, rain, lightning, and watery places. It connects the terrestrial and the heavenly, becoming a sustainer of life in the temperamental desert landscape of the Southwest.” From the 2023 exhibition Liquidity: Art, Commodities, and Water at Hood Museum of Art
