Roads End Prescribed Fire, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, May 2005
Prescribed fire is used in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks as part of the long-term fuels management program to reestablish and maintain the natural fire cycle. Fire is a vital process in the Sierra Nevada that has been excluded by the intervention of human fire suppression activities. Fuel loadings are now at unnaturally high levels, and prescribed fire will alleviate these conditions by reducing high fuel loadings under controlled conditions. The Roads End Prescribed Fire was planned as a moderate intensity ground fire. These images show differing fire intensity levels throughout the day and fire crew at work.
