Red-eyed Vireo
An olive-green bird with a light gray face stripe and red eye rest on a piece of cut wood.
Red-eyed Vireos are olive-green on top with white on the underside and darker wings and tail. Rarely seen, they are heard from April to October in forested areas, among the high leafy treetops. There the female builds a small pouch-like nest. While at the park, they eat insects like caterpillars, beetles, cicadas, wasps, and grasshoppers. After migrating to South America for the winter, their diet changes to fruit. They are the most productive singers of all the songbirds, singing as many as 20,000 songs in a day. 12,500 different song types have been recorded.
