James Russell Lowell to Fanny Longfellow, May 1861
Manuscript letter
[page 1] [Pencil in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana's hand:] [c May 1861]
Elmwood, Monday,
My dear Mrs Longfellow,
as a fête champêtre in a parlor would bear no resemblance to its original except in the syllable sham, I have determined to exercise that power in which parents surpass Joshua & shall command the sun to stand still & keep back the first of May till next Wednesday.
I knew that the little girls would go out of doors & that the

earth would be damp & so I feared colds. I think that May day is to be treated with great circumspection – for to judge by the tricks she commonly plays she still resents the cutting down of her altar by old Endicott at Merrymount. Hoping that Miss Alice has no engagement for Monday (& if she have, the feast shall move forward another day)
I remain very sincerely
yours
J. R. Lowell.
