Squirrel corn, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, 2015.
Squirrel corn (Dicentra canadensis) may be confused with Dutchman's breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) where ranges overlap. Tell them apart by the flower shape: squirrel corn has flower-shaped blooms while the Dutchman's breeches, perhaps not surprisingly, has flowers that are more similar to the shape of elongated leggings. Native to deciduous woodlands in eastern North America, this plant is spring ephemeral which means that it flowers in spring and becomes dormant in summer.
