Two people stand by a waterfront with an informational sign, overlooking a body of water and distant bridge.
The Captain Avery Museum, a Chesapeake Gateways Network site, hosts the Smithsonian’s Spark! Places of Innovation exhibition, celebrating creativity in rural America. Its companion exhibit, Buyboats to Beaches – 100 Years of Resiliency on the Chesapeake Bay, features Norman Gross’s intricate model workboats and highlights how Black and Jewish communities built their own waterfront havens during segregation.
