Mr. James R. McConaghie, Supt.
Gettysburg National Military Park,
Gettysburg, Pa.
Dear Sir:
We send you herewith copy of the inscription to be used on the Alabama Memorial which would ask you to have approved as soon as possible so that we may proceed with the placing of the inscription on the monument.
The inscription is as follows:
ALABAMIANS: - To appear on the top of the die stone in five inch bronze letters.
YOUR NAMES ARE INSCRIBED ON FAME’S IMORTAL SCROLL – To appear on the face of the sub-base as shown on the blue print, 3” bronze letters.
By ALABAMA DIVISION UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY,
Nov. 12, 1933 - To appear in 12” incised letters on the base of the first ledge (this is the ledger on which the sub-base rests).
We also wish to call your attention to a slight change which has been made in the size of the die stone. In order to give the correct amount of stone around the bronze group we found it necessary to increase the die stone 6” in length and 8” in width. This, however, did not require any change in the rest of the memorial.
We also wish to call your attention to the change which has been made in the walk material. It has now been decided to use native Gettysburg stone for the flagging instead of slate as called for in specifications. We shall arrange to proceed with the settling of this granite work as soon as notified that both the inscription and change above have been approved.
