Contra dancers at Cuyahoga Valley National Park
U.S. National Park Service
Dancers listen for the caller's instructions at a contra dance in Boston Township School House. || New England Style contra dancing was probably brought to the Cuyahoga Valley by 19th century settlers arriving from New Hampshire, Connecticut, and New York. It is similar to square dancing and performed by couples facing in two opposite lines. Before each dance, the caller explains the figures while walking the dancers through them. Cuyahoga Valley National Park hosts contra dances twice a month.
