Title:

Dune and Prairie Warbler Habitat Restoration at Sleeping Bear Dunes NL from September 2010-October 2011

Description:

Images show the dune and prairie warbler habitat restoration at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SLBE). SLBE staff cut and hand piled the 10 acre infestation of Austrian pine (Pinus nigra) in September 2010. 384 of the invasive trees were removed generating 47 burn piles. In the Fall of 2011 INDU fire management staff assisted SLBE with planning and executing the burning of the piles. The work removed a large infestation that was displacing native jack pine (Pinus banksiana). Jack pine is used by state listed (endangered) Prairie warbler (Dendroica discolor) for nesting. Future management ensure Austrian pine regeneration is suppressed allowing native species to recruit into the site. Vegetation plots have been establish to monitor native plant recruitment back into the area.
