The illustration depicts a Native American Indian tending a corn crop in between a series of check dams. Check dams were made of low stone walls built across shallow drainage areas. The check dams caught soil washed from the mesa tops by heavy summer rains. The moist, fertile terraces formed behind these dams provided ideal locations for planting crops such as corn or maize.
