“Elba 2Mo 22nd 1827
Respected Friend
The time has now [been passed?] that for which I set to come down there when Levi was here and am not in a situation to come or to do much for thee yet --- I am sorry to relate that I have met with a serious disappointment I have expected until lately to receive about $250 in a lump together But in the contrary I have rec’d nothing and am not like to very soon unless I take a Potash works or an article of a lot of land by which I ca save myself I think I had better take the ashery I may then in the course of two or three months raise something from it or sooner if I take it immediately – I had some conversation with Levi about buying my place there, he did not know whether he could undertake it this spring or not, but he would talk with thee about it --- I should like to know [continues
[On back of document] whether he has spoken to thee if not I wish thee would try to get him to take it if he is in any situation to take it—for I must depend on selling it and have been in hopes that I could have affected it before this time – I have made calculations to go to keeping house soon if an arrangement of that kind can be made – other wise I dont know as I shall dare to undertake it. I should have been extremely glad to have been at it before this time—I am very confident that I shall not be able to pay anything on the mortgage this spring – I shall think myself well if I can pay the rest—If he will buy or thee will wait as long as possible and see whether I can sell it –will venture to go to keeping house soon—Please to write immediately and oblige thine --
