Monk seals spend two-thirds of their life at sea. They’ll molt completely once a year which helps keep their coat clean and free of algae. If you see seals in Kalaupapa, or anywhere, give them plenty of space, and do not swim if they are on the beach. This photo was taken by a biological science technician whose monitoring and photography was conducted under NMFS Permit #22677. Photo was taken with a telephoto lens.
