Mr. George F. Emery, Superintendent
Gettysburg National Military Park
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 17325
Dear Mr. Emery:
Thanks for your letter of February 25, 1970, in reference to the Indiana monument.
It would appear that in the transcription of the language a typographical error was made and that Companies I and K of the 1st Cavalry were intended to be part of the text. We really do not know how to explain how the 21st Infantry got into the language and certainly agree that the 21st was not in the Battle of Gettysburg.
We have therefore revised the proposed text and enclose it herewith.
We have no further information concerning the statement that Indiana sustained the first casualty and the first death among the Union ranks in the Battle of Gettysburg. If it is your thought that the text should be further revised, we will abide by your decision and will be glad to receive your proposed revision.
Very truly yours,
