A red sandstone arch punctuates the snow of a small park on 7th Street in Calumet. On this site in 1913, a shout of "FIRE!" caused a panic during a Christmas Eve party at the Italian Hall. The crowd rushed down a steep stairway to escape the building. Unable to exit fast enough, those at the bottom were crushed by those on the top. Though there was no fire, at least 73 people, including almost 60 children died in the calamity. Demolished in 1984 due to structural concerns, the Italian Hall is the most famous building that is now #MissingintheCopperCountry.
