The name of Stable Street in Calumet Location wasn't arbitrary; it was once home to the Calumet Mining Company's horse barn. Built before 1871 when the Calumet and Hecla Mining Companies merged, it was a vital part of C&H operations for many years.
Horses stabled in this facility were used to transport people and goods. Some served as mounts for the company's security force. Used less often as other modes of transportation gained favor, the C&H stables were eventually abandoned. Still standing in a 1956 aerial photo, this large horse barn went #MissingintheCopperCountry sometime before 1970. Do you know when it was demolished?
